Wines of Austria Zoom Dinner
Some of The Finest Wines In The World

I haven't been more excited about a dinner all year!!! Austrian Wines are amazing. They are also the most food-friendly wines on the planet. I have loved them for a long time. I would like to share that love with you on March 19th with some very good friends of mine joining from Europe.

The first time I went to Austria was a wine junket circa 1996. I spent a week with a dozen other American sommeliers traversing every wine region of the country, doing in-depth tastings, winery tours and vineyard walks with these wonderful winemakers whom I had never heard of. Their generosity -opening up vintages back to the 40s- was wonderful, but the wines were even moreso.

All those years ago, on that first trip, I met a young man named Peter Schleimer, a local wine expert who had been charged with herding the American somms all week. As the dozen of us in a mini-van would pull up to a beautiful winery on the steep hillsides overlooking The Danube, Peter would zoom in on his orange Triumph motorcycle to meet us. I was very jealous.

At the end of the week I mentioned to Peter that one day I would like to return with my motorcycle and tour around. He had a better idea. We left Vienna with another somm friend on three bikes at 5 PM on a Wednesday. At the time, Peter was a wine critic and restaurant reviewer for Austria's #1 wine publication: Vinaria. We reviewed 6 delicious restaurants in various parts of the country over the next four days. At each one the food was sublime and we took a deep dive into the wine lists. These were serious serious wines and completely underrated.

As the years went on, I got to meet quite a number of winemakers in Austria. My friend Johannes Hirsch, who makes some of the finest wines in The Kamptal, will be on the zoom call. We'll also be joined by Hans Reisetbauer, perhaps the biggest personality in all of Austria. He revolutionized the making of Austrian brandy, also called schnapps, also called eau-de-vie. It's remarkable. He is probably the finest maker of this style of brandy in the world.

Schleimer is now Editor-in-Chief of Vinaria Magazine. He will guide us through some extraordinary wines. I sincerely hope that you can join us. This is about as authentic an experience as you will find.
